It was opened on July 30, 1793 by\u00a0Queen Maria I\u00a0as a replacement for the\u00a0Tejo Opera House, which was destroyed in the\u00a01755 Lisbon earthquake. The theatre is located in the historical center of Lisbon, in the\u00a0Chiado district.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisbonstopover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/saocarlos-operahouse2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3616\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lisbonstopover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/saocarlos-operahouse2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"saocarlos-operahouse2\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lisbonstopover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/saocarlos-operahouse2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lisbonstopover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/saocarlos-operahouse2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">In 1792, a group of Lisbon businessmen decided to finance the construction of a new Opera House in the city. The theatre was built in only six months following a design by Portuguese architect\u00a0Jos\u00e9 da Costa e Silva, with\u00a0neoclassical\u00a0and\u00a0rococo\u00a0elements. The general project is clearly inspired by great Italian theatres like the\u00a0San Carlo\u00a0of\u00a0Naples\u00a0(interior) and\u00a0La Scala\u00a0in\u00a0Milan\u00a0(interior and fa\u00e7ade). In the early 19th century, when the Portuguese Royal Court had to\u00a0flee\u00a0to the Portuguese\u00a0colony of Brazil\u00a0to escape the invading\u00a0Napoleonic troops, a theatre modelled on the S\u00e3o Carlos was built in\u00a0Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<div class=\"thumb tleft\" style=\"color: #252525;\">\n<div class=\"thumbinner\">The main fa\u00e7ade has a decorated clock, the Portuguese\u00a0coats-of-arms\u00a0and an arched entrance hall (a\u00a0portico). The theatre was named after the\u00a0Princess Charlotte of Spain, who had come to Portugal in 1790 to marry the future King,\u00a0Prince John: Carlos (Portuguese form of Charles) is the masculine form of Charlotte. A\u00a0Latin\u00a0commemorative inscription dedicates the theatre to the princess.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">The beautiful main room is elliptic, has five tiers of boxes and seats 1148 people. The luxurious royal box was lavishly decorated by the Italian Giovanni Appianni. The ceiling was painted by Manuel da Costa and the stage by Cirilo Wolkmar Machado.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">The first opera presented here, in 1793, was\u00a0<i>La Ballerina Amante<\/i>, by\u00a0Domenico Cimarosa. The most famous Portuguese composer of the time,\u00a0Marcos Portugal, became musical director of the S\u00e3o Carlos in 1800 after returning from Italy, and many of his operas were staged here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">Between 1828 and 1834, the S\u00e3o Carlos was closed due to the\u00a0Portuguese Civil War, fought between kings\u00a0Miguel I\u00a0and\u00a0Pedro IV. In 1850, the lighting of the interior was changed togas illumination, the latest technology available. Shortly afterwards, the Portuguese state bought the theatre from\u00a0private investors. After a few failed attempts,\u00a0electrical illuminationwas installed in 1887. From 1935 to 1940, the theatre was closed for repairs. In 1974 a resident opera company was established. In 1993, the\u00a0Orquestra Sinf\u00f3nica Portuguesa\u00a0was created as the Teatro&#8217;s affiliate orchestra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">Since 2010, the artistic director of the Teatro Nacional de S\u00e3o Carlos is\u00a0Martin Andr\u00e9.<span style=\"font-size: 10.8333330154419px;\">\u00a0<\/span>Since 2008, the principal conductor of the Orquestra Sinf\u00f3nica Portuguesa is\u00a0Julia Jones.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Teatro Nacional de S\u00e3o Carlos,\u00a0National Theatre of Saint Charles\u00a0is an\u00a0opera house\u00a0in\u00a0Lisbon.
