{"id":3604,"date":"2015-03-19T16:50:27","date_gmt":"2015-03-19T16:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lisbonstopover.com\/?p=3604"},"modified":"2015-07-19T16:59:05","modified_gmt":"2015-07-19T16:59:05","slug":"palace-of-the-marquises-of-fronteira","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lisbonstopover.com\/?p=3604","title":{"rendered":"Palace of the Marquises of Fronteira"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #252525;\">The Palace of the Marquesses of Fronteira was built in 1671 as a hunting pavilion to\u00a0Dom\u00a0Jo\u00e3o de Mascarenhas, 1st\u00a0Marquis of Fronteira, who received his title from KingAfonso VI of Portugal\u00a0for his loyalty to the\u00a0House of Braganza\u00a0in the\u00a0Portuguese Restoration War.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">The palace is the private residence of the Marquesses of Fronteira.<\/p>\n<p>The palace is located in a very quiet area, near the\u00a0Monsanto Forest Park. The house and the garden have glazed tiles representing different themes such as battles or monkeys playing trumpets.<\/p>\n<p>The Room of the Battles has panels representing scenes of the\u00a0Portuguese Restoration War; one of them shows D. Jo\u00e3o de Mascarenhas fighting a\u00a0Spanish\u00a0general.<\/p>\n<p>The dining room is decorated with portraits representing some members of the Portuguese\u00a0nobility, painted by artists such as\u00a0Domingos Ant\u00f3nio de Sequeira.<\/p>\n<p>The chapel, dating from the end of the 16th century, is the oldest part of the palace. The fa\u00e7ade is adorned with stones, shells, broken glass and porcelains. It seems that those pieces were used during the palace\u2019s inauguration and were broken on purpose just not to be used again.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of being the current residence of the Marquis of Fronteira some of the rooms, the library and the garden are open to public visits.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #252525;\">The palace garden, an area of 5,5 hectare, is adorned with\u00a0<\/span>Portuguese tiles<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0with pictures that represent the different\u00a0<\/span>arts<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0as well as\u00a0<\/span>mythological<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0figures. The garden hedges are cut in order to represent the different year\u00a0<\/span>seasons<span style=\"color: #252525;\">.
